In a show of support for educational advancement in Nigeria, former military leaders General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar have praised Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, Registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO), for his transformative initiatives since taking office.

In a statement released by Azeez Sani, Acting Director of NECO’s Directorate of Information and Digital Communication on Saturday, it was disclosed that the commendations were made during separate courtesy visits by the NECO management team to the retired generals at their Hilltop residences in Minna.

General Babangida underscored the critical role of NECO in Nigeria’s educational development, stressing the need for public support for the Council.

He expressed satisfaction with the improvements made under Prof. Wushishi’s leadership, which included tackling significant challenges such as inadequate office facilities, lack of operational vehicles, and low staff morale.

Babangida remarked, “I am quite impressed with what you have achieved since your assumption of office. NECO is an important institution with a great role in the educational development of Nigeria. I urge you and your management team to continue your efforts in sustaining this vital institution.”

General Abubakar, whose administration established NECO in 1999, also lauded Prof. Wushishi’s efforts. Reflecting on the challenges presented by the Registrar, he stated, “I don’t know whether to commiserate with you or to commend you given the difficulties you inherited. However, I commend you for overcoming these challenges and positioning NECO as a leading examination body globally.”

During their visit to the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Farouq Bahago, the NECO team received further commendation.

The Emir praised Prof. Wushishi for effectively addressing staff unrest and improving overall performance, affirming that the people of Niger State stand firmly behind him.
