BSUTH sets up molecular laboratory

The Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, has set up a fully equipped molecular laboratory to provide tests and investigations in B group streptococcus Nucleic Acid, Chlamydia Trachomatis Nucleic Acid test, Ureaplasma Urealyticum Nucleic Acid test, Human Mycoplasma Nucleic Acid test, Gonococcal Nucleic Acid test.

The Chief Medical Director, Dr. Stephen Hwande, whose tireless efforts at reposition the facility as a bastion of medical excellence said at the setting up ceremony that the Laboratory is one of the many equipment at the facility to upgrade it to a top class tertiary hospital.

The CMD said, “to achieve the above aim therefore, the introduction of a community health college to provide the hospital and the state with the required man power, the upgrade of obsolete facilities, and the procurement of more ambulances to enhance emergency services, has been carried out”.

“The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art machines, ensuring 100% accurate test results. My desire of making the hospital a one-stop facility, providing ultimate service delivery to patients in line with the hospital’s vision and mission”, Dr. Hwande pointed out.

A molecular laboratory is a medical laboratory that specializes in the detection and analysis of genetic material (DNA or RNA) and proteins to diagnose and monitor diseases. It plays a crucial role in various fields, including cancer diagnosis and treatment, infectious disease detection and management, genetic testing, and research.

The establishment of this molecular laboratory at the hospital represents a significant advancement in the hospital’s capabilities, enabling it to provide more accurate and timely diagnoses and treatments for patients, and further solidifying its position as a leading healthcare institution.

BSUTH was at the verge of collapse when Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia called on the Dr. Stephen Hwande, who has had an illustrious medical career in private practice for a rescue mission. In just over six months, there has been a massive improvement in service at the hospital.
