The Nigerian Senate has condoled with the family, friends, and colleagues of Senator Joseph Iorshagher Akaagerger, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 69.
A motion sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Udende Mwnga (Benue East) at the plenary on Thursday was presented to commemorate the life and legacy of the late senator.
Born on May 5, 1956, in Iber-Gaar, Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, Senator Akaagerger led an exemplary life of national service, spanning the military, legal, political, and traditional sectors of society. He began his military training at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, in 1976 and later attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, United Kingdom (1977-1979), graduating as a commissioned officer of the Nigerian Army.
Senator Akaagerger served in various sensitive and strategic positions, including: Adjutant of the 3 Provost Battalion, Jos (1983-1985); Officer Commanding D Company, 231 Battalion, Maiduguri (1986-1987); Commanding Officer, 195 Battalion, Ojo Cantonment, Lagos (1990-1991); Directing Staff and Deputy Chief Instructor, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji (1994)
In August 1995, Senator Akaagerger was appointed Military Administrator of Katsina State, where he governed effectively until May 1999. After his retirement from military service, he transitioned to a successful legal career, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Jos, and a Ph.D. in International Economic Law from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He established a reputable law firm, Akasgerger & Co. (Ambe Chambers), and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1967.
In 2007, Senator Akaagerger was elected to represent Benue North East Senatorial District in the 6th Senate of the National Assembly (2007-2011). During his tenure, he served with distinction on several committees, advocating for the rule of law, constitutional development, national security, justice reform, military welfare, and good governance.
Senator Akaagerger was a traditional titleholder, bearing the revered Tiv title of “Ambe u Konshisha”, and was a trustee of the Jichira Development Association, playing a significant role in community development and peace building across Benue State.
The Senate recognizes Senator Akaagerger’s legacy as a principled patriot who served Nigeria loyally in peace and conflict, in uniform and in parliament. His life symbolized discipline, humility, and service above self. The Senate pays tribute to his life and service, condoling with his family, friends, and colleagues.
