Mallam Mele Kyari: A Rebuttal to Calls for his Sack as GMD of NNPCL

By Hon. Engr. Magaji Dau Aliyu.

Calls for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Group Managing Director (GMD) Mallam Mele Kyari to be removed are both ill-founded and misplaced. As NNPC’s top executive, Kyari has shown extraordinary vision and leadership to guide the business through difficult conditions and towards meeting important benchmarks.

This essay attempts to refute these claims and emphasize on his successes and challenges.
Under Kyari’s leadership, NNPC has witnessed unprecedented openness with public financial statement disclosure and rigorous adherence to world-class best practices.

These acts have among the stakeholders, encouraged more responsibility and confidence. Kyari has also effectively lowered costs and raised production by initiating several projects meant to improve operational efficiency. Among these projects are innovative-technology-and-procedures-that-has-revolutionized-NNPC’s-activities.

Kyari has also successfully diversified NNPC’s income streams and so lessening the reliance on crude oil sales and greatly increasing investments in gas, electricity, and renewable energy. This calculated change has put the company in a position aimed toward long-term sustainability. Moreover, Kyari has developed close bonds with important players such as host communities, state governments, and foreign partners, thereby-improving-cooperation-and-teamwork. Kyari has faced great obstacles notwithstanding these successes.

The COVID-19 epidemic and geopolitical concerns have brought unheard of disruptions to the world’s oil market, therefore affecting NNPC’s operations and income. Kyari inherited a corporation rife with problems including corruption, inefficiencies, and antiquated infrastructure. Furthermore endangering NNPC’s operations and profits are security issues like pipeline vandalism-and-oil-theft. Dealing with these difficulties calls for time, capital-and-labour.

The success of NNPC depends on consistency and stability in leadership. Kyari has shown his capacity to lead the corporation towards a better future. And as such, demands for his sacking are both unfair and premature, given his noteworthy achievements. Instead of pointing out mistakes, we should highlight his achievements so far and support him in building on them

Kyari has demonstrated these impressive reforms by show of courage and accountability bears striking resonance with the maxim that charity begins at home.

This internal cleansing is a demonstration of his resolve to ensure everyone is on the same page in the energy sector.
All these reforms being carried out by the current GMD of NNPCL are to grow the economy of the nation, creating the enabling and rightful environment to enhance investment and strengthen the productive base of the Nigerian economy.

At this juncture, it behooves all well-meaning Nigerians to lend their support towards this patriotic cause.
