An early morning accident has on Wednesday claimed five lives at Oye-Agu junction in Abagana, Njikoka LGA of Anambra State.
Eye witness account claimed that a sienna bus failed break and rammed into the traders in the ever busy junction.
“The vehicle was on top speed, when he got to the junction and discovered that his break was not functioning again, he tried to use the gutter to stop his bus.
“Unfortunately, many of the traders didn’t know that death was knocking as they continued doing their business right in front of the gutter.
“As at last count, seven persons are believed to be consumed by the accident with many others sustaining varying degrees of injuries,” he said.
In his reaction to the development, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam(CP) has cautioned drivers/transporters to always do the necessary checks before plying the road, especially during this Ember month.
The CP reaction was contained in statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Tochukwu Ikenga (SP)
“The CP made this call while reacting to the fatal motor accident that occurred today 11/9/2024 by 7:15 am along Onitsha- Enugu Old road by Oye agu junction Abagana, that resulted in the death of a 5year old girl and four other persons seriously injured.
“Preliminary information reveals that the accident occurred due to the break failure of the Toyota Sienna vehicle carrying passengers and en route to Lagos rammed into traders selling by the roadside at Oye Agu junction.
“Furthermore, the CP while condoling the family of the deceased directs arrest and interrogation of the driver. To this end, the Vehicle has been recovered at the Station as the investigation is ongoing,” Ikenga said.
