Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, emphasized the importance of integrating the African Union Agenda 2063 into Nigeria’s development strategy. He believes this will set a model for other African countries to follow, as Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy.
The AU Agenda 2063 is a framework aimed at transforming Africa into a global powerhouse. It envisions an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful continent, driven by its citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena ¹ ². The agenda comprises seven aspirations, focusing on economic growth, social inclusion, sustainable development, and good governance.
According to Kalu, Nigeria’s development aspirations align with the continent’s growth initiatives. The President Bola Tinubu-led government is already implementing Agenda 2063’s goals across economic diversification, youth empowerment, and good governance.
Nigeria is diversifying its economy away from oil dependency through investments in agriculture, technology, and renewable energy. This aligns with Agenda 2063’s goal of sustainable economic growth ¹. Infrastructure development, such as regional connectivity projects and the African Continental Free Trade Area, is also crucial for economic development.
Kalu highlighted the importance of empowering Nigeria’s youth through education and job creation, aligning with Agenda 2063’s people-driven development strategy ¹. He called for a comprehensive review of existing policies to support the continent’s development agenda.
Increased investment in critical infrastructure, including transportation, energy, and digital connectivity, is essential for enhancing Africa’s competitiveness and facilitating intra-African trade ¹. Regional integration and technological advancement are also vital for Africa’s growth.
The lawmaker emphasized Nigeria’s role as a leader on the continent, reinforcing its position by integrating Agenda 2063 into its national framework ¹. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts from government, civil society, and the private sector to achieve Agenda 2063’s ambitious goals.
By aligning with Agenda 2063, Nigeria will contribute to a prosperous and united Africa, shaping the continent’s future ¹. This requires a commitment to sustainable development and shared prosperity.
Kalu’s intervention reflects a profound understanding of Nigeria’s interconnectedness with the broader African agenda ¹. He urged colleagues to establish frameworks strengthening partnerships amongst African nations, fostering trade and economic collaboration.
Ultimately, Nigeria’s proactive stance in aligning with Agenda 2063 will be essential in shaping a prosperous and united Africa, achieving transformative change envisioned for 2063 and beyond.
