North-West group condemns unwarranted political attacks on Matawalle

A northern group, Coalition of Good Governance in North West Development, has condemned the recent political criticisms directed at the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, describing them unnecessary distractions from the ongoing fight against banditry and terrorism.

In a statement, the coalition asserted that the minister is diligently working to enhance security in the region.

Recall that recent accusations from Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal and several groups claimed that Matawalle is maintaining ties with the bandits terrorizing the North West.

However, the coalition’s Executive Secretary, Abdullah Gusau, emphasized that Matawalle, along with other security leaders, has played a vital role in improving safety throughout the North West.

Gusau also questioned the timing and relevance of these allegations, asking where were the critics during the height of violence under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The coalition opined that while terrorism and banditry have not been completely eradicated, significant progress has been made.

“We are seeing fewer attacks and more stability in areas that were previously under siege,” Gusau remarked, urging recognition of the current defense leadership’s efforts.

He called for ongoing support for Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa and Minister Matawalle, encouraging them to stay focused on their mission.

“Now that the war against terrorism is turning the tide against bandit leaders, our security forces need encouragement, not distractions,” Gusau added.

The coalition warned that undue criticism at this critical time could undermine ongoing security operations, which have seen bandit leaders and their networks significantly weakened.

They stressed the importance of maintaining a united front in the fight against terror.

Gusau also underscored the complex nature of security challenges in the North, noting that while progress is being made, the fight is far from over.

“It is a gradual process, but the government is on the right track,” he said.

The group’s defence of Matawalle comes amid increasing scrutiny of Nigeria’s security apparatus, with critics arguing that more needs to be done. However, the coalition insists that the current leadership has made tangible improvements in securing the region.
