For contemplating establishing a University with the name of the current president of the country coupled with the harsh economy and hardship biting the citizens, the leader of Team Nwawelugo Movement, Chief Ikechukwu C Anonye has come down heavily on the national assembly for toeing a wrong direction.
In a statement to journalists, he described the action as a misplaced priority, saying that instead of thinking on how to curb the insecurity, galloping inflation and unjustifiable fuel price increase, the lawmakers were engaged on a non essential project.
He stated that the National Assembly’s push for Bola Ahmed Tinubu University at this critical stage in Nigeria’s history has raised eyebrows.
Part of his statement in part reads:
“It’s being perceived as an attempt to curry favor from the president especially considering the country’s pressing challenges. While the country is grappling with numerous issues, many are questioning the timing and priorities of the National Assembly”.
He listed some of the concerns surrounding the move as, economic. He explained that Nigeria is facing significant economic hurdles, and diverting resources to establish a university named after the president may not be the most prudent decision.
On education, he explained that the country’s education sector is already struggling with various problems, such as inadequate funding, outdated infrastructure and poor teachers’ welfare.
He opined that the move is seen as an attempt to appease the president rather than address the nation’s pressing needs, saying that its essential to prioritize the country’s well-being and address the underlying issues affecting Nigerians.
He advised that the national assembly should focus on making legislation that benefits the nation as a whole, rather than pursuing actions that may be perceived as self-serving or sycophantic.
