Gov Dauda gets 2 weeks to account for N12bn reportedly spent on security

The Zamfara Concerned Citizens (ZCC), a coalition of residents in Zamfara State, has issued a two-week ultimatum to Governor Dauda Lawal, demanding a comprehensive breakdown of the N12 billion reportedly spent on security operations from January 2024 to date.

In a statement by its coordinator, Yusuf Muhammad Gusau, the group urged the governor to provide a transparent and verifiable account of how the funds were allocated, expressing concerns over the persistent insecurity plaguing the state.

The ZCC’s demand follows growing discontent among residents who claim the security situation has shown no significant improvement, despite the substantial expenditure.

“The people of Zamfara, who continue to suffer from poverty, lack of adequate public services, and ongoing security threats, deserve clear answers,” Gusau said.

The group criticized what it described as misplaced priorities by the administration, noting the government’s spending on luxury vehicles while critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure remain underfunded.

“Our communities continue to grapple with the daily threat of violence,” the statement added, “and it is deeply troubling that such a significant amount of public funds—allocated with the purpose of securing our lives—appears to have been spent without any meaningful impact.”

The ZCC reaffirmed its commitment to holding the government accountable and warned that citizens will not accept any form of financial mismanagement.

The group stressed that Governor Lawal’s response to the ultimatum is essential, not only to ensure transparency but also to rebuild public trust in his administration’s dedication to the security and welfare of the people.
