Arewa youths reject Dikko’s appointment as NSC Chair; threaten mass protest

By Jane Okeke

The Arewa Youth Movement has condemned the appointment of Shehu Dikko as the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), claiming it undermines the principles of good governance and transparency in Nigerian sports.

In a statement signed by Amb. Muhammed Saad Aboki, National President of the group, the youth body raised concerns about Dikko’s previous tenure as Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC).

The statement highlighted allegations of financial mismanagement and a lack of transparency that tarnished Dikko’s leadership, making him unfit for the new role at the NSC.

The group urged the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately launch a thorough investigation into Dikko’s actions during his time at the LMC.

The youth movement warned that if no action is taken, it will mobilize its members for peaceful protests across northern Nigeria starting November 1, 2024, to press for his removal.

They further emphasized that Nigerian sports require leaders with integrity, transparency, and a commitment to excellence.

The statement also called on the ICPC and EFCC to inform President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian public, and the international community about the findings of their investigations. The Arewa Youth Movement stressed the importance of preventing further damage to the reputation and integrity of the National Sports Commission.

The statement reads, “We firmly believe that this appointment is a grave injustice to the Nigeria people, particularly the youth, who deserve a sport sector led by impeccable integrity and untainted by allegation of corruption.

“Mr. Dikko’s past position as former chairman of the league management company (LMC) is riddled with accusations of financial mismanagement and unethical practices.

“We the Arewa Youth Movement call upon the ICPC and EFCC to immediately investigate Mr. Shehu Dikko.

“We believe that the appointment of Mr. Dikko to the position of Chairman of the National Sports Commission undermines the principles of good governance, transparency, and accountability.

“If the ICPC and EFCC fail to act swiftly and decisively on this matter, we will be forced to take action to ensure that justice is served.

“The Arewa Youth Movement will mobilize its members across the Northern Region and initiate peaceful protests starting from 1st November 2024 to demand his removal in the sports sector.

“The integrity and future of Nigerian sports depend on the appointment of individuals with a proven track record of honesty and ethical conduct.

“We believe that this is a matter of urgent national concern; Nigerians, especially the youth, deserve to have a sport sector that is free from corruption and led by individuals who are committed to promoting fairness, transparency, and excellence.”
