Security achievements : Over 700 CSOs applauds Matawalle as top minister for October

A coalition of 774 civil society organizations (CSOs) has commended Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, for significant improvements in national security recorded throughout October.

This show of support follows Matawalle’s active engagement with communities in conflict-prone areas and the execution of strategic military initiatives to counter banditry, particularly in the North-West.

The coalition’s spokesperson, Idoko Attah, remarked in a Wednesday statement, “In October, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, made significant strides in enhancing security in the North-West, focusing on addressing the root causes of banditry and strengthening the region’s defense infrastructure.”

Attah highlighted a key achievement of Matawalle: the facilitation of ten operational vehicles deployed to military forces in Sokoto State, an effort made in partnership with the Sokoto State Government. This additional support has enhanced the mobility and readiness of troops, allowing them to respond more efficiently to insurgent threats. Matawalle also led the establishment of three new military formations in critical areas of Sokoto—Isa, Sabon Birni, and Goronyo—strategically chosen to increase security presence in bandit-affected regions.

In recent conversations, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised Matawalle’s leadership, acknowledging his pivotal role in advancing national security. During a recent briefing, Matawalle provided President Tinubu with an overview of his efforts and the Armed Forces’ recent successes, emphasizing the military’s professionalism and commitment to national defense. His security assessment tour in Sokoto State included visits to locations long impacted by banditry, such as Gundumi, Isa, and Sabon Birni, where he consulted with local leaders and residents to gain firsthand insights into their security needs.

The recent additions of military formations and resources like the operational vehicles supplied by Sokoto State have already enhanced troop mobility and operational strength on the ground.

“Your exemplary leadership has been pivotal in advancing our national security goals,” Tinubu commented, recognizing the achievements that have greatly reduced insecurity in several high-risk areas.

The President’s endorsement comes amid Matawalle’s recent accomplishments in suppressing insurgent activities in Zamfara, where joint military operations led to the neutralization of several notorious bandit leaders. Despite recent cabinet reshuffles, Matawalle retained his role, supported by findings from the National Security Adviser’s office.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, addressed allegations against Matawalle, dismissing them as “politically motivated.” Onanuga clarified that the National Security Adviser (NSA) had thoroughly investigated rumors linking Matawalle to bandit activity and found them baseless. He emphasized that many of these claims, originating from political opponents, were intended to damage Matawalle’s reputation.

“The NSA found these claims to be baseless. Matawalle’s continued presence in the cabinet is a testament to his integrity and dedication to national security,” Onanuga stated.

Matawalle’s work in October has included substantial advancements in military infrastructure across the North-West. The recent establishment of three military bases in Sokoto State, specifically in Isa, Sabon Birni, and Goronyo, aims to provide a rapid response to insurgent threats and bolster security in high-risk areas, reaffirming the government’s dedication to ensuring peace and stability in remote communities.

Additionally, Matawalle highlighted the success of coordinated anti-bandit operations in the region. High-profile bandit leaders, such as Kachallah Buzu, have been neutralized, reducing the operational capabilities of criminal networks affecting border communities. These steps are part of Matawalle’s broader strategy to eradicate banditry and restore lasting peace to affected regions.

The coalition of civil society organizations remains steadfast in its support for Matawalle, noting that his accomplishments represent a positive shift in Nigeria’s security efforts. Community leaders and citizens alike have praised his proactive approach, expressing optimism that his policies will continue to strengthen the country’s security framework and deter future threats.
