From Salisu Maradun, Gusau

Following increasing high cost of living which has resulted in abject poverty in Zamfara state, thousands of vehicles are currently parked at various houses across the state as their owners could not afford fueling them, checks by The Authority in the state had revealed.

According to the checks, as a result of the unhealthy development, majority of them have resorted to using okada to their respective places of work as most of the victims happened to be civil servants whose offices are far away from their residence.

The checks also showed that as the situation continued to be unbearable coupled with hunger affecting the entire state, some of them sold their own while others only mortgaged theirs to purchase food items.

Our correspondent in the state further gathered that apart from Gusau, which serves as the capital of the state all the remaining local government suffer the same problem as there is non of them where more than five vehicles ply their roads.

A number of vehicles belonging to some politicians and civil servants could be seen at various car selling centres in Gusau, while some resorted to selling their plots and houses as the only way for them to survive even as some of them blamed the government of the state for its vehement refusal to come to the aid of the people by means of distributing food items to them which they said are currently available at different stores.

Some of the aggrieved people who spoke to our correspondent expressed their sadness over what they described as insensitivity of the governor of the state, Dauda Lawan.

One of them who gave his name as Halilu Yahuza, a 67 year old man, and a resident of Filin Nayawo in Gusau explained that he has never witnessed a poor leadership like the one presently in his life.

According to him, despite the existing hardship and difficulties of life across Zamfara and which is too glaring, yet, the leaders have continued to fold their arms and how can you as a leader. “this is ruthlessness,” Yahuza added. “How can you as a leader, allow the led to suffer when there is alternative,” he asked, explaining that it is true that the whole nation suffers economically and politically, but what transpires in our state with regard to the problem is the worst, because presently, it is only in Zamfara you can find people having only one meal a day, very few among us, as I am talking to you can afford two to three square meals per day and in addition to this, all other sources of income for the citizens have been blocked by the present government, only his friends and they are the only ones that can affluently drive their cars”, he stated.

Speaking further, Halilu narrated that they are not unaware of the huge amount of money the state gets from the federation account monthly,” but to our dismay this man always keeps mute, but time will tell,” he concluded.
