The House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology has directed the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) to ensure clear labeling of all Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) products. This directive is in line with global best practices and aims to enable Nigerians to make informed decisions about their consumption.
During a budget defense session, Director General of NABDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, attempted to justify GMOs by stating that many Nigerians already consume GMO products unknowingly. He cited the example of cereals imported from the US, where 90% of maize is genetically modified. However, Mustapha acknowledged that some Nigerians have rejected GMOs due to concerns about their safety.
Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, a member of the committee, emphasized the need for clear labeling of GMO products. He argued that in advanced countries, consumers have the right to choose what they eat, but in Nigeria, labeling is not mandatory. Abiante expressed concerns about the safety of Tela Maize, a GMO product, and called for more research before its adoption.
The committee’s directive is a significant step towards promoting transparency and consumer awareness about GMO products in Nigeria. By ensuring clear labeling, Nigerians will be able to make informed decisions about their diet and health.
Prior to the directive, the DG of NABDA had presented the agency’s proposed budget for the 2025 fiscal year, which stands at N5.3 billion. The budget includes an overhead cost of N834.4 million and a personnel cost of N14.5 million. NABDA has a staff strength of about 4,000 spread across its 39 centers nationwide.
The committee also received budget submissions from other agencies, including the Trypanosomiasis Research Institute, Project Development Institute (PRODA), National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI), and the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP).
Lastly, the House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology has taken a crucial step towards promoting consumer awareness and safety in Nigeria. By directing NABDA to ensure clear labeling of GMO products, the committee is prioritizing the health and well-being of Nigerians.
