Gov Ododo outlines comprehensive healthcare reforms in Kogi State

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has announced plans for extensive reforms aimed at transforming the state’s primary healthcare system to ensure accessible and high-quality medical services for all residents.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ forum on primary healthcare revitalization in Lokoja, Governor Ododo—represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu—introduced a series of measures to enhance the efficiency of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs).

These include periodic spot checks conducted by the Primary Healthcare Task Force in partnership with local governments and traditional rulers. The initiative is expected to improve accountability, coordination, and service delivery at PHCs.

“Our administration is determined to address the challenges in the primary healthcare system and ensure better health outcomes for our citizens. This will be achieved through improved data collection and adherence to best practices in case management across all PHCs,” the Governor stated.

Governor Ododo reiterated his administration’s commitment to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, increasing immunization coverage, and fostering awareness of primary healthcare’s role in the state’s medical ecosystem. He also credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting healthcare reforms nationwide, noting that this federal backing has been pivotal to Kogi State’s progress.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, highlighted the importance of collaboration in sustaining healthcare projects. He revealed that one PHC in each of the state’s 239 wards is operational and receiving funding, with plans to further expand fully functional facilities across all wards.

Meanwhile, the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, His Royal Majesty, Ahmed Tijani Muhammed Anaje, praised the Ministry of Health for its dedication to improving primary healthcare services. He assured stakeholders of traditional rulers’ continued efforts to monitor and uphold the standards of PHCs.
