Group lauds Matawalle’s RUGA Initiative for tackling herders-farmers conflicts

The Zamfara West Community Development (ZWCD) group has lauded Bello Matawalle, the former Governor of Zamfara State and current Minister of State for Defence, for implementing the Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) project to address the persistent conflicts between herders and farmers in the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the group’s convener, Kabiru Sabitu Gidan Goga, emphasized the transformative impact of the initiative during Matawalle’s governorship from 2019 to 2023.

Gidan Goga described the RUGA project as a landmark effort aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence, enhancing rural development, and boosting agricultural output.

“If we say we do not miss Dr. Bello Matawalle, then we have committed a sin against God,” Gidan Goga remarked, underscoring the value of Matawalle’s policies.

The project, which began in Maradun Local Government Area, Matawalle’s hometown, was introduced as a holistic solution to the ongoing clashes between the two communities.

“It featured modern amenities, including schools to provide education for pastoralist and farming communities, irrigation systems to support sustainable agriculture, and veterinary clinics to improve livestock health and productivity,” he explained.

By addressing the unique needs of herders and farmers alike, the initiative sought to enhance access to education and healthcare while improving agricultural resources, fostering harmony, and driving rural development.

“This innovative approach not only resolved conflicts but also advanced rural growth, highlighting Matawalle’s dedication to peace, economic stability, and inclusive development in Zamfara State,” Gidan Goga added.

After completing his tenure as governor, Matawalle was succeeded by Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party.

However, Gidan Goga noted that Matawalle’s legacy, particularly the RUGA initiative, continues to receive recognition for its effectiveness in resolving herders-farmers disputes and advancing rural community development.
