Reject global taxation, Senator Ibrahim advises UN

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyekachi, Abuja

Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who represents Ondo South Senatorial District has urged the United Nations (UN) to reject proposals for global taxation, citing the international system’s lack of authority and comprehensive structure. Ibrahim made this statement during the winter parliamentary opening session in New York.

According to Ibrahim, global taxes would exacerbate inequality and potentially increase poverty, undermining the UN’s efforts to eradicate poverty by 2030. He argued that the international system is anarchic, lacking the authority to enforce compliance.

As an alternative, Ibrahim suggested that environmental polluters compensate Africa to alleviate the debt burden. He emphasized the need for African legislators to take decisive action and demand compensation from the rest of the world for the continent’s environmental degradation.

Ibrahim’s statement comes as the UN explores innovative financing options to fund the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While global taxation has been proposed as a potential solution, Ibrahim’s concerns highlight the need for careful consideration and alternative approaches.

The Senator’s call to action underscores the importance of African voices in global decision-making processes. As the international community continues to navigate complex development challenges, Ibrahim’s perspective serves as a reminder of the need for inclusive and equitable solutions.
