Edo Govt Under Fire Over Rising Insecurity, Economic Decline

The Edo State government is facing mounting criticism over its handling of security issues and the economy, with many accusing it of abandoning successful initiatives implemented by the previous administration.

According to reports, the state has seen a surge in killings and kidnappings, with over 40 people slain in just three months. This is a significant increase from the previous administration, which had successfully reduced crime using technology and community-based security networks.

“We are holding the government accountable for the rising insecurity and economic decline in the state,” said a spokesperson for the PDP Action Group. “The current government has destroyed or relegated the infrastructure used by the previous government, leading to a spike in crime.”

The Edo State Inland Revenue Service has also reported a significant drop in internally generated revenue (IGR), from N7 billion to N4.7 billion, and a decline in taxpayers count.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the government of fiscal mismanagement and siphoning funds meant for the government to private companies.

“The government has given statutory functions of tax enforcement to third parties with a track record of diverting government funds,” said the PDP spokesperson. “It’s no surprise that government monies are not going into government coffers.”

The government has denied the allegations, accusing the PDP leadership of sponsoring kidnappings in the state.

The crisis has taken a toll on the state’s economy, with many businesses forced to close early due to security concerns. The state’s GDP has also declined significantly, from $25 billion to $17.6 billion.

The Edo people are calling on the government to take responsibility for securing the state and restoring the economy.
