Kogi State took a major step toward economic diversification on Friday as Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo unveiled newly acquired mining equipment and announced the state’s acquisition of 15 mining licenses.
Speaking at the Muhammadu Buhari Square in Lokoja during the unveiling ceremony, Governor Ododo described the development as a transformative milestone for Kogi’s economy. He noted that both the licenses and equipment would propel the state into the forefront of solid minerals development in Nigeria.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, the newly secured licenses are expected to significantly strengthen the state’s efforts in developing its rich solid minerals sector.
Highlighting Kogi’s untapped natural wealth, the Governor said the state is endowed with a wide range of minerals, including gold, lithium, limestone, and coal, among more than 30 commercially viable solid minerals.
“This is a strategic move to harness our natural resources and reduce our reliance on federal allocations. The 15 licenses secured will allow Kogi to begin large-scale exploration and mining, ensuring sustainable economic growth,” the Governor stated.
He stressed that the initiative is aimed at generating employment and improving the standard of living for residents, noting that the newly unveiled equipment will support efficient resource extraction across the state.
Governor Ododo reiterated his administration’s determination to position Kogi as a central player in the nation’s mining industry. He said the state is ready to leverage its mineral resources to enhance internally generated revenue and steer its own economic direction.
“We are ready to harness the full potential of our natural resources. Kogi will no longer wait for federal allocations but will take its future into its own hands through this mining initiative,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, described the sector as a critical pillar for revenue generation and economic growth.
“Being a major player in the mining sector requires equipment, laws, and policies. We are prepared to meet these requirements,” he stated.
Gegu disclosed that the Kogi State Solid Mineral Processing Company Limited has successfully secured the 15 mining licenses, a development that positions the state to commence immediate exploration activities.
