In an inspiring and emotionally charged address, Senator Frank Ibezim on Monday honored the extraordinary achievements of Tobechi “Toby” Achionye, a young Nigerian artist, musician, and autism advocate whose story is capturing hearts around the world.
Speaking at a special Autism Awareness Month event, Senator Ibezim described Toby’s life as a “shining beacon of kindness, courage, and creativity,” celebrating the teenager’s remarkable rise from a non-verbal child diagnosed with autism at age four to an internationally recognized creative force.
“Toby stands before us not as someone defined by a diagnosis, but as a trailblazer,” Ibezim declared. “An artist, a musician, and a voice for inclusion.”
Toby’s journey, the senator noted, has been powered by resilience and the unwavering support of his family. His talent for recreating logos, signs, and iconic artwork with stunning accuracy, alongside his gift for music—learning songs by ear and conveying deep emotion through melody—have won him widespread admiration. Among his accolades is a second runner-up placement in Autism’s Got Talent in Atlanta, Georgia.
But Toby’s message extends far beyond his artistic achievements. Through his initiative Be Kind by Toby, he is changing perceptions of autism and neurodiversity. His line of T-shirts, each design reflecting a piece of his personal journey, and his newly released song “Be Kind” serve as calls for empathy and understanding.
Senator Ibezim emphasized that Toby’s vision is bold and far-reaching: a world where neurodiversity is not just accepted, but celebrated.
“His dream is to reach every child, in every language, in every part of the world,” the senator said. “Through his books, music, fashion, and art, Toby is building a movement.”
Issuing a passionate appeal, Ibezim called on sponsors, educators, media platforms, and advocates to support Toby’s work.
“This vision needs more than applause. It needs action,” he urged. “He needs funding to translate and distribute his books, to power awareness campaigns, and to support his continued artistic and educational work.”
The event concluded with a resounding message for all in attendance: to become champions of inclusion and builders of a better tomorrow. As Autism Awareness Month continues, Senator Ibezim urged Nigerians—and the global community—to carry forward the torch of kindness Toby has ignited.
“Let us ensure that Toby’s voice not only echoes today—but resonates across generations to come,” Ibezim said. “May God bless Toby, and may his light continue to inspire the world.”
Also speaking at the event, Toby’s Managers, Noni Okocha said,”It’s an honour to stand here today to speak about two very special books—Understanding Autism: Toby’s Journey and Be Kind: A Story of Acceptance & Inclusion.
“These books were inspired by Toby—his heart, his creativity, and his extraordinary journey. Writing them allowed me to tell his story in a way that educates, uplifts, and encourages kindness. Toby’s life reminds us that every child has a voice—even if it doesn’t sound like ours.
“Through these books, our hope is to teach children and adults alike to see beyond labels, to embrace differences, and most of all, to be kind.
Let me now share a short excerpt…”
