The Senate of the 10th National Assembly has responded to recent comments made by Pastor Tunde Bakare, a prominent cleric and political figure, that criticized the institution. The Senate views his criticisms as biased and politically motivated, given his past roles as a presidential aspirant and vice-presidential candidate.
*Senate’s Rebuttal*
The Senate acknowledged Pastor Bakare’s right to express his views but felt compelled to respond to what they deemed unwarranted invective and misleading assertions. According to
Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, they emphasized that his comments, laced with contempt and unsubstantiated claims, risk eroding public trust in democratic institutions.
The Senate noted that Pastor Bakare’s legal background and political experience influence the context of his statements, which carry significant political implications. They also pointed out that some matters he referenced are sub judice, and the National Assembly will not be drawn into responding to issues already before a court of competent jurisdiction.
The Senate clarified that tension between the National Assembly and the Executive arm of government does not necessarily equate to effective legislative oversight. They emphasized that principled engagements and results-driven processes are the true test of institutional maturity.
The Senate also remains open to engaging with all Nigerians, including Pastor Bakare, in the spirit of constructive engagement. They urged public figures to temper their criticisms with facts and a sense of national responsibility, emphasizing that thoughtful contributions inspire reform, not resentment.
