The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has announced that the House will prioritize legislation on electoral reforms, security, and Nigerians’ welfare.

Addressing members of the House on their resumption from Sallah and Easter recess, the Speaker emphasized the need to expedite the consideration and passage of critical bills that impact Nigerians’ stability, prosperity, and well-being.

The electoral reform bill is among the key legislation the House will focus on, aiming to strengthen democratic processes. Additionally, the House will prioritize legislation on unemployment, poverty alleviation, fiscal reform, healthcare, education, and security. These areas are crucial to improving the lives of Nigerians and addressing pressing national issues.

As the House prepares to mark its second anniversary, the Speaker outlined a series of engagements aimed at celebrating progress, showcasing institutional reforms, and reinforcing the connection between the Legislature and the Nigerian people. These events include a Public Policy Dialogue, Citizens’ Engagement and Media Roundtable, zonal media engagements, and the House Open Week.

The Speaker called on all members to participate fully in these activities, emphasizing their importance in evaluating the House’s work, refining its agenda, and projecting its collective vision. He also highlighted the enhancement of digital infrastructure within the chamber, which will facilitate legislative activities.

During the legislative engagement before the break, the House achieved significant milestones, including the passage of the Tax Reform Bills. This demonstrates the House’s commitment to responsible economic governance and national development. The Speaker also noted the House’s swift response to the political unrest in Rivers State, demonstrating its fidelity to the Constitution.

The House will work with the Senate to constitute a high-level Committee on Reconciliation to facilitate dialogue, promote peace, and support the restoration of democratic order in Rivers State and other conflict-affected regions.

The Speaker condemned the recent attacks on innocent citizens, extending condolences to the bereaved families and urging security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice and prevent further violence.

The House will also focus on its longer-term legislative priorities, including the ongoing work of the House Committee on the Review of the Constitution.
