Support us in area of regulatory framework, hawkers appeal to gov’t

In order to achieve its aims and objectives contributing effectively to boost Nigeria’s contribute, the Nigeria Union of Hawkers (NUH) has called on the government to support its regulatory guidelines.

According to a press statement from Prof Olumuyiwa Ezekiel Babalola, the National President of the Union on Friday, the aim of the Union is to create a dignified and friendly trade environment for hawkers. He therefore emphasized that hawking has been a vital trade, empowering individuals, including unemployed graduates and families, and helping them escape poverty.

However, Babalola lamented that the trade has been marred by exploitation of children and child labor, posing security risks. To address these challenges, the union proposes: Creating a database of hawkers with identification details; Providing social support for them; Establishing a formal bureaucratic process to regulate the trade

The NUH president outlined plans to: Provide medical assistance; Offer scholarships; General maintenance for members and; Training programs to empower hawkers and improve their businesses

Babalola emphasized that the union’s regulatory guidelines would transform the hawking trade, deter child abuse and criminal activities, and enhance societal wellbeing. He urged the government to support the union’s efforts, saying it would uplift hawkers’ lives and contribute to the economy.

The union’s initiative aims to balance the benefits of hawking with the need to protect vulnerable individuals and promote a secure trading environment.
