A Christian advocacy group based in Benue State has raised concerns over what it perceives as growing foreign involvement in Nigeria’s internal affairs, warning that such meddling—alongside domestic political opportunism—could threaten the country’s unity and sovereignty.
The Concerned Christians of Benue State (CCBS), in a statement signed by its chairman, Matthew Samuel, expressed alarm over what it described as calculated efforts by international actors, in collaboration with some local figures, to exploit Nigeria’s ethnic and religious divides—particularly in the northern region.
“Nigeria is once again at the crossroads of faith, patriotism, and the quest for peace,” the statement read.
Samuel continued: “Since the inception of Nigeria’s independence, the specter of foreign powers seeking to influence our internal affairs has loomed large. The northern states have often been the epicenter of these destabilization efforts, where external actors have sought to exploit ethnic and religious divisions for their gain.
“From the early days of our nationhood, these foreign interests have engaged in a subtle yet persistent campaign to undermine our sovereignty, often through the manipulation of local agents who, in their quest for power and influence, have betrayed the very essence of our national unity.
“This manipulation has not been limited to overt military interventions; rather, it has taken the form of insidious propaganda, economic sabotage, and the fostering of discord among our diverse communities. International human rights organizations, which were once seen as champions of justice, are increasingly being accused of becoming pawns in the hands of international politicians.
“Their reports, often lacking in nuance and context, have been weaponized to serve foreign agendas, further complicating the already delicate situation in Nigeria.”
The group also referenced the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State as a flashpoint that has emboldened political figures from Benue to allegedly stir unrest for personal gain.
“The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State marked a significant turning point in Nigeria’s struggle for stability. In the aftermath of this declaration, certain failed politicians from Benue State have sought to capitalize on the chaos, aiming to bring about instability within our region.
“These individuals, motivated by personal ambition rather than the common good, have found a willing ally in organizations such as Amnesty International, whose reports and statements have often exacerbated tensions rather than alleviating them.
“The partnership between these disgruntled politicians and Amnesty International raises serious questions about the integrity of the information being disseminated.
“How did Amnesty International arrive at casualty figures that are not only provocative but also appear to be strategically aligned with the narratives of those seeking to destabilize our region? The lack of transparency in their methodologies and the apparent reliance on questionable sources have led many to suspect that these figures are inflated and politically motivated.”
The CCBS reaffirmed its position against external interference and pledged resistance to any actions that threaten the nation’s sovereignty.
“As the Concerned Christians of Benue State, we categorically state that any form of foreign interference in our national affairs will not be accepted and will be vehemently resisted. We are a people of faith, and our belief in the sovereignty of Nigeria is unwavering.”
Samuel also made an appeal for cooperation among institutions and citizens to strengthen peace and accountability.
He added, “Our strength lies in our unity, and it is only through collective action that we can safeguard our heritage and ensure a peaceful future for generations to come. We urge all Nigerians to remain vigilant and discerning, to question the sources of information that seek to manipulate our perceptions, and to stand firm in our commitment to a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
“We implore all stakeholders, government, civil society, and the international community, to work collaboratively in fostering an environment of peace, respect, and mutual understanding.
“Let us not allow the machinations of foreign powers and their local collaborators to dictate our destiny. Together, we can build a Nigeria that is not only resilient but also a beacon of hope for other nations grappling with similar challenges.”
