Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has called on parliamentarians worldwide to unite in commitment to peace, justice, and shared destiny. According to a press statement from Jackson Udom on Wednesday, Special Assistant to the Senate President on Media, Akpabio made the call at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in collaboration with the United Nations.
Akpabio emphasized the need for multilateralism in addressing global challenges, citing conflicts, poverty, and climate disruption. He noted that these issues affect not only individual nations but the entire world, making international solidarity essential.
He highlighted Nigeria’s efforts to address insecurity, poverty, and youth disillusionment. He cited legislative actions, such as the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act and the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, as well as initiatives to promote innovation, inclusion, and poverty reduction.
The Senate President urged parliamentarians to commit to collaboration and courageous pursuit of solutions that transcend borders and partisan divides. He emphasized that multilateralism must be more than rhetoric, calling for a movement of resolve and international solidarity.
“As parliamentarians, let us commit to collaboration and the courageous pursuit of solutions that transcend borders and partisan divides. Let us stand in partnership, committed to peace, justice, and shared destiny. Multilateralism must not become a rhetoric. It must rise as a movement of resolve,” stated.
The conference provided a platform for global leaders to address pressing issues and work towards a more peaceful and just world. Akpabio’s call for partnership and cooperation reflects the IPU’s mission to promote democratic governance and international cooperation.
