The National Assembly has reiterated its commitment to delivering people-centred and timely amendments to the 1999 Constitution, Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin said on Friday.
Addressing a joint retreat of the Senate and House of Representatives’ Committee on Constitution Review in Lagos, Senator Barau appealed to lawmakers to work towards transmitting the first set of amendments to State Houses of Assembly this year.
The retreat will review 69 bills, 55 state creation requests, two boundary adjustments, and 278 local government creation requests.
“We have been in this process for two years, engaging stakeholders and harvesting views,” Senator Barau said, urging lawmakers to approach the Constitution with patriotism and nationalism.
He emphasized focusing on citizens’ interests and avoiding competitive debates, aiming for recommendations meeting constitutional approval thresholds.
