Barr Ejiofor condemns Effurun killing

From Isaac Ojo

Human rights lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor has condemned extrajudicial killing of a civilian by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State, describing the trend as a “moral catastrophe” that undermines the sanctity of life.

In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, Ejiofor warned that the continued normalisation of unlawful killings by security operatives reflects deep institutional failure and erodes public trust.

He called for transparent investigations, accountability, and urgent reforms within the security sector.

He, however, praised the prompt intervention of the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Rilwan Disu, noting that the swift response demonstrates a level of institutional responsibility.

Ejiofor also cited recent incidents, including a shooting in Asaba and the reported killing of a corps member in Abuja, as evidence of a troubling pattern of excessive use of force.

He urged the Federal Government under Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritise security sector reforms and improve accountability mechanisms.

According to him, unchecked extrajudicial actions by security forces risk deepening insecurity and weakening Nigeria’s democratic foundations.
