The Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has struck out a suit filed by 998 fishermen and women from Yayo-Ama village in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area against the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA). The suit, filed in 2018, was struck out for lack of merit.

The suit was initially filed by Percy Nyengiyikado and Aribiba Ngeribara, along with other community members, over oil spills in 2008/2009. The court ultimately ruled in favor of NOSDRA.

Director General of NOSDRA Chukwuemek Woke, said the plaintiff acting as representatives of about one thousand fishermen and women of yayo-Ama village in ogu bolo LGA, filed the case against the agency in 2018.

He said this compelled the agency to perform certain specific statutory duties in respect of two oil spills that occurred in 2008/2009 at the bolo west oil fields against shell petroleum development company of Nigeria.

In a landmark judgement delivered by Hon Justice E.A Obile, the case was struck out for lacking merit.
