Fulani youths, villagers clash over well in Bauchi; one killed, houses burnt

A deadly clash between Fulani youths and residents of Makiya village in Darazo Local Government Area over a water well, has left one vigilante dead, several people missing and property destroyed.

Sources told the incident began on Jan. 31, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m., when a misunderstanding broke out between Fulani youths and some Makiya villagers over a well located in the community.

The source said during the initial altercation, one Musa Abdulkarim, 40, sustained serious injuries on his body.

“Later that same day, at about 11:30 p.m., the same group of Fulani youths mobilised and returned to Makiya village, where they attacked the community. They killed a vigilante member whose name is yet to be ascertained, set a house and a shop ablaze and fled to an unknown destination,” the source said.

The sources added that as a result of the нападения, three persons and 10 cattle were reported missing.

Following the report, police operatives were immediately deployed to the area. The corpse of the deceased and the injured victim were conveyed to the Primary Health Care Centre, Lanzai, where a medical practitioner confirmed the vigilante dead, while the injured man was admitted for treatment.

The police said efforts had been intensified to trace the missing persons and cattle and to arrest the fleeing suspects.

Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
