Nigeria has once again demonstrated its commitment to defence diplomacy and regional security cooperation as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Nigerian Army, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, arrived in Liberia for the 69th Armed Forces Day Celebration of the West African nation.
A press release issued by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Nigerian Army said the COAS is in Liberia at the invitation of the Armed Forces of Liberia and is expected to deliver a keynote address at the celebration scheduled for Wednesday, 11 February 2026, underscoring the deepening military and diplomatic ties between both countries.
Lieutenant General Shaibu was warmly received on arrival by the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Major General Davidson Forley. In a ceremonial display of mutual respect and military tradition, the Nigerian Army Chief inspected a Guard of Honour mounted by Liberian troops, symbolising the long-standing professional relationship between the two armed forces.
Beyond ceremonial engagements, the visit highlights Nigeria’s strategic use of defence diplomacy to strengthen bilateral relations, promote military professionalism, and enhance collective security within the West African sub-region. Nigeria has continued to play a leading role in regional peacekeeping, capacity-building and security cooperation across Africa.
As part of his official itinerary, the COAS also paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Liberia, where he met with the Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Rahmat Muhammad. During the interaction, Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the embassy’s efforts in fostering Nigeria–Liberia relations and in safeguarding the interests of Nigerians residing in Liberia.
The Armed Forces Day celebration provides Liberia an opportunity to reflect on its military heritage, operational milestones and the critical role of the Armed Forces in national development and stability.
Lieutenant General Shaibu’s participation further reinforces Nigeria’s resolve to build strong partnerships with sister African militaries in addressing emerging security challenges.
The visit carries added significance given the Nigerian Army Chief’s previous service as Military Assistant to a former Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia. In recognition of his contributions to Liberia’s defence sector, he was previously awarded the Distinguished Service Order, one of the country’s highest military honours.
