The Ghanaian government has approved the renaming of the country’s main aviation gateway in the capital, reverting Kotoka International Airport to its original name, Accra International Airport.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Transport, authorities said the decision would be implemented through a phased update of official records and public materials. The process will include revisions to statutory instruments where necessary, airport signage, aviation publications, and digital platforms.
“The government has considered it appropriate to restore the airport to its former and internationally recognised name,” the ministry stated.
According to the statement, the designation Accra International Airport (ACC) has remained the official name in the records of the International Civil Aviation Organization, despite the domestic renaming decades ago.
The facility was renamed in 1969 in honour of Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a senior military officer who was killed during a failed coup attempt in 1967 at a site that now forms part of the airport’s forecourt.
Officials said the restoration aligns with efforts to standardise Ghana’s aviation identity and ensure consistency across international documentation.
