NUJ Condemns Harassment of Journalists by Alex Otti Over Legitimate Questioning

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) strongly condemns the reported harassment and verbal intimidation of journalists by the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, following a media engagement in which a journalist requested verifiable data to demonstrate the impact of government policies on the lives of Abians.

It is deeply troubling that a journalist, performing his constitutional and professional duty by asking for measurable evidence of governance outcomes, would be subjected to hostility. In a democracy, public office holders are accountable to the people, and the media serves as a legitimate bridge between the government and the governed.

Requesting data to assess policy impact is neither an act of provocation nor disrespect. It is a fundamental responsibility of journalists to seek facts, clarity, and transparency—especially on matters affecting public welfare. Any attempt to intimidate or harass journalists for demanding accountability undermines democratic values and press freedom.

The NUJ reminds all public officials that freedom of expression and press freedom are guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Public servants must demonstrate tolerance, openness, and respect for the role of the media in strengthening governance and promoting transparency.

We therefore call on Governor Alex Otti to:
1. Refrain from actions or statements that may intimidate journalists in the discharge of their duties.
2. Uphold the principles of transparency and accountability by providing verifiable data when requested.
3. Publicly reaffirm his administration’s commitment to press freedom and constructive media engagement.

The NUJ stands firmly with all journalists in Abia State and across Nigeria. We will continue to defend the rights, safety, and professional integrity of media practitioners without fear or favour.

A free press is not an adversary of government—it is a partner in progress.

Signed:
Alhassan Yahya
President
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)
