Bandits have attacked Makarfi town in Makarfi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing a resident and abducting his aged mother.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday night around the General Hospital area, particularly around Titin Bariki and Tsangaya quarters of the town.
Residents said the attackers stormed the area between 9:15 pm and 10 pm, throwing the community into panic as sporadic gunshots were heard.
A resident, Abdulrahman Adamu Makarfi, in a post on his Facebook page, narrated how the quiet town suddenly descended into chaos.
“The terrifying incident resulted in the death of one person and the abduction of his mother by unknown gunmen. Sadly, this is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred in our community,” he wrote.
He said such attacks were gradually becoming frequent in the area, noting that incidents of banditry now occur almost every quarter of the year.
According to him, what was previously seen as isolated cases is beginning to form a pattern that threatens the peace and stability of the town.
Meanwhile, a video clip circulating on social media showing a heavy exchange of gunfire between suspected bandits and security operatives, which was said to have occurred in Makarfi was described as fake by residents and the Police .
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the incident and said two suspects had been arrested.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said although the police were informed late about the attack, officers responded swiftly and repelled the assailants.
“We were informed late but we responded promptly and arrested two suspects who are now in our custody,” he said.
Hassan also dismissed the viral video, saying it did not originate from Makarfi, and warned the public against spreading fake news on social media.
