Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on members and supporters of the party to remain calm and law-abiding as Nigeria awaits the Court of Appeal ruling on the party’s leadership crisis.
The appeal court is expected to deliver judgment on Monday, March 9, 2026, in a case that has deepened divisions within the opposition party and raised concerns about its internal leadership structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on behalf of the PDP Governors’ Forum by the Director-General of the forum, Emmanuel Agbo, the governors, led by the chairman of the forum and governor of Bauchi State, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, said the party respects the judicial process and would abide by the court’s decision.
“We stand at a defining moment for our democracy. The judiciary, as the custodian of justice, carries the weight of ensuring fairness, impartiality, and the preservation of national stability,” the statement said.
The forum stressed that regardless of the outcome of the ruling, the PDP remains committed to peace and democratic principles.
It urged party members across the country to conduct themselves with restraint before, during and after the judgment.
“We urge our members, supporters, and indeed all Nigerians to remain calm and disciplined in their reactions to the ruling. Our collective response must reflect maturity and a deep respect for the rule of law,” the governors said.
They added that the party’s leadership would meet immediately after the judgment to review the ruling and determine the next line of action.
The governors also reassured party members with political ambitions that the PDP remains committed to providing a viable platform for the 2027 elections.
“Democracy thrives on diversity of voices and competition of ideas. The PDP will continue to embody these values and provide a credible platform for members seeking elective offices,” the statement noted.
Looking ahead to the next general elections, the forum said the party remains determined to present a strong alternative to Nigerians.
“Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the PDP remains resolute in its mission to provide Nigerians with a strong, credible, and people-centered alternative,” the statement added.
The governors further described the judiciary as a critical pillar of Nigeria’s democracy, noting that its role in defending the constitution has contributed to the stability of the country’s democratic system.
As at the time of filling this report, PDP has only three governor including Engr. Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).
