Akume, who was represented at a high-level meeting by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, received members of the Organising Committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex, where discussions centred on leveraging sports as a powerful tool for health advocacy and national mobilisation.

The proposed charity match is designed to attract global football legends, top government functionaries, development partners, private sector stakeholders, and civil society organisations, all united by a common goal of raising awareness on cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Officials at the meeting noted that the initiative aligns with ongoing national health priorities, particularly in addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.

They stressed that innovative platforms such as sports can significantly amplify public health messaging and drive behavioural change at scale.

Speaking on behalf of the SGF, Kana reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote public health and social development, adding that the collaboration reflects a multi-sectoral approach needed to tackle critical health challenges like cancer.

Members of the Organising Committee expressed optimism that the event would not only galvanise widespread awareness but also attract funding and partnerships to strengthen cancer care infrastructure across the country. They highlighted the symbolic power of football in uniting diverse audiences behind important causes.

The “War Against Cancer” charity match is expected to serve as both a high-profile sporting spectacle and a national call to action, reinforcing the message that collective effort remains essential in the fight against one of the world’s deadliest diseases.
