The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for withdrawing its recognition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) faction led by David Mark and delisting the party’s National Working Committee from its official portal.
The organisation said the action reflects INEC’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and the protection of Nigeria’s electoral integrity.
In a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, the group noted that the decision highlights the commission’s determination to uphold democratic standards and ensure political parties function within the bounds of established laws.
DWI stated that by taking the decisive step to withdraw recognition from the ADC’s disputed leadership, INEC has reinforced its commitment to democratic principles and internal party discipline.
The group further observed that the move comes at a critical period as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, stressing the need for strict compliance with democratic norms and heightened vigilance.
He said: “The withdrawal of recognition of the David Mark-led faction signifies more than just a bureaucratic action; it is a reaffirmation of the importance of legitimacy within political parties.
“The ADC, like all political entities, must reflect the will of its members and operate in accordance with its constitution. By removing the names of the National Working Committee from its portal, INEC has sent a clear message.
“Leadership must be earned through democratic processes rather than assumed through questionable means. This is a vital message to all political stakeholders, reminding them of their responsibilities to uphold democratic ideals.
“Moreover, INEC’s reaffirmation of neutrality is crucial in the current political climate. As the nation gears up for the 2027 general elections, it is imperative that all political actors respect the independence of the electoral commission.
“Democracy thrives on the principle of fair play, and any actions that could disrupt the electoral process must be avoided. INEC’s call for political stakeholders to act responsibly is a timely reminder that the health of our democracy depends on the collective commitment of all parties involved.
“The DWI believes that a robust democracy necessitates the active participation of citizens, political parties, and institutions alike. It is the responsibility of political leaders to engage with their constituents transparently and respectfully.

He urged the ADC leadership, as well as other political parties, to settle internal disagreements through constructive dialogue, warning that lingering disputes could adversely affect the electoral process.
