Uzodimma picks Orlu Senate form, signals bid for Senate Presidency as Imo race heats up

By Abbanobi -Eku Onyeka

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has reportedly purchased nomination forms to contest the Orlu Zone senatorial seat, a move that signals his intention to return to the National Assembly and vie for the Senate Presidency. The development was disclosed in a political update circulating on Thursday, May 1, 2026.

The implication, according to the same update, is that current Orlu Zone Senator, Osita Izunaso, will not be returning to the Red Chamber. Meanwhile, Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi is said to be “strongly being penciled” for a role, though details of his expected position were not specified.

A breakdown of senatorial forms so far purchased from Imo State shows varying levels of interest across the three zones. As of May 1, Orlu Zone has recorded 1 aspirant, Okigwe Zone 3 aspirants, and Owerri Zone 4 aspirants, indicating a more crowded field in the state capital’s district.

Political watchers say Uzodimma’s entry into the Orlu race could reshape permutations for the 10th Senate leadership if he secures both the senatorial seat and sufficient support from colleagues for the presiding officer position. The governor previously represented Orlu Zone in the Senate before his election as governor.

The notice concluded with a directive that “calls on this matter won’t be entertained,” suggesting that further clarifications from the source would not be forthcoming at this time.
