2027: APC waives screening for Tinubu ahead of primaries

By Chesa Chesa

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a waiver of screening requirements for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the party’s upcoming primary elections.

The decision was reached at the NWC’s 188th meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.

The committee resolved to deem Tinubu as duly screened in line with the party’s constitution, effectively exempting him from appearing before a screening panel.

The APC said the move was in exercise of its constitutional powers under Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv), which empowers the NWC to organise and supervise primaries and grant waivers in special circumstances.

Explaining the rationale, the party noted that the President has already secured widespread endorsements and a vote of confidence from key organs within the APC, including the Progressive Governors Forum, the National Assembly leadership, and other stakeholders.

It also referenced the support expressed during the party’s National Summit held on May 22, 2025, as well as at other statutory meetings.

The NWC further argued that requiring Tinubu to undergo another screening process would be unnecessary, given that he had previously been screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries.

“As the incumbent President and leader of our great party, having been duly screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before a screening committee at this time would be redundant,” the statement said.
