Police order crackdown on traffic violators in Abuja

By Daniel Tyokua

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has ordered an aggressive enforcement of traffic laws, directing officers to arrest and prosecute motorists who drive against traffic, popularly known as “one-way,” as well as other reckless drivers.

The directive was issued on Sunday by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi, who charged all Divisional Police Officers and Motor Traffic personnel to intensify enforcement across the nation’s capital.

The move, according to the Command, is aimed at improving road safety, ensuring smoother traffic flow and preventing avoidable loss of lives and property caused by traffic violations and dangerous driving.

A statement by the Police public Relations officer, Josephine Adeh, specifically directed personnel to clamp down on motorists who drive against traffic and other forms of reckless driving capable of endangering road users.

He also ordered intensified patrols and surveillance around major roads, congested areas, junctions and traffic stops to flush out traffic robbers who prey on motorists trapped in congestion to steal their valuables.

The Commissioner warned that the enforcement must be carried out professionally and within the confines of the law.

He cautioned police personnel against turning the exercise into an avenue for extortion, harassment, intimidation or unlawful use of force, stressing that officers who violate the rights of members of the public would face disciplinary action.

The Command urged motorists and other road users to obey traffic signs, avoid reckless driving and comply with all traffic regulations.

It also called on residents to promptly report suspicious persons and activities to the nearest police station.
