No fewer than 2,000 residents of Kafur and Malumfashi in Katsina State are set to benefit from a comprehensive free eye-care programme initiated by the Special Adviser to the President on Political and Other Matters, Alhaji Ibrahim Kabir Masari.
The humanitarian initiative is designed to provide free medical screening, treatment, prescription glasses and eye surgeries to people suffering from various eye-related conditions.
According to a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Engr. Abdullahi Ramat, the programme will bring together experienced medical professionals and eye-care specialists to examine patients, determine their conditions and recommend appropriate treatment.
According to the organisers, beneficiaries will have access to free medication, prescription glasses, as well as minor and major eye surgeries where medically required.
Patients diagnosed with cataracts and certified fit for surgery will undergo treatment using the modern Phacoemulsification technique, an advanced procedure that uses specialised ophthalmic equipment to remove cataracts and restore vision.
Those requiring specialised procedures beyond the capacity of the programme will be referred to appropriate specialist hospitals for further care.
The organisers also revealed that the first phase of the exercise is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Kafur General Hospital, while the programme will move to Malumfashi General Hospital on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
Activities at both locations are expected to commence at 9:00 a.m.
Beyond medical treatment, the organisers said beneficiaries who undergo surgery will also receive atampa or shadda, alongside other items as part of the humanitarian support package.
The initiative is expected to provide relief to residents who may otherwise be unable to afford eye examinations, medication, corrective glasses or surgery due to financial constraints.
Residents experiencing poor vision, symptoms associated with cataracts or other eye-related challenges have therefore been encouraged to attend the exercise for professional assessment.
The organisers said each patient would be properly evaluated and directed towards the treatment most suitable for their condition.
