APC presidential primaries: On zoning we stand, Southern Govs. insist

By Ezeocha Nzeh

Chairman of the Southern Governor’s Forum and the Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has maintained the position of the Southern Governors demand for a 2023 president from the zone, stating that it is only a Southern president that can defeat the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections

Akeredolu therefore advised the leadership of the APC, to rotate power to the South so as to retain the presidency in 2023.

The Ondo state Governor, who stated this in a message he released via his Facebook page, on Thursday, re-echoed the position of his colleagues in the Southern Nigeria Governors’ Forum that power should be rotated to the South.

Akeredolu’s message is coming amidst report that his counterparts from the North may have settled for a Northerner as president Muhammadu Buhari’s successor, even as the president has hinted that he would personally pick his successor

President Buhari had in a meeting with APC governors last Tuesday, called on them to reciprocate his gesture to them, when he allowed them to win second terms in office, as well as allowing them pick their successor by also supporting him to pick his successor in 2023

The APC has scheduled its presidential primaries for June 6 to 8, with about 23 aspirants seeking the party’s ticket for the presidential election, with about 19 Southern aspirants in the race, while the North has four

Akeredolu in his message, charged the party leadership “to work hard to retain power by rotating the Presidency to the South.

Governor Akeredolu, who doubles as the Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, was on Wednesday evening announced as the Chairman of Security and Compliance for the party’s special convention.

“APC must work to retain power. We must rotate power to retain retain power !!! Rotate to the South. Shikena,” the message reads.
