Group tasks ANSIEC on credible LG elections, condemns new electoral law

By Emma Okereh

A group, interested in the credibility of the forth coming local government elections in Anambra state, Team Nwawelugo Movement, yesterday condemned what it termed absurd ANSIEC Law Amendment.

In a statement issued to newsmen Thursday, it lamented the amendment of Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), which it claimed was was impromptu, rushed and skewed to favour present appointed local government caretaker committee chairmen.

It urged the electoral umpire to uphold the constitution and conduct elections in a transparent and lawful manner.
The press statement in part, reads:

“We strongly condemn the recent amendment to the ANSIEC law by the Anambra State House of Assembly, led by Hon. Speaker Somto Udeze. This amendment unfairly favors the government by declaring all 21 illegal TC chairmen and councilors as their party’s candidates for the September 28th LGA election.

“Furthermore, we are alarmed by the impromptu notice of LGA election on August 12th, a mere 47 days away. This rushed timeline raises serious concerns about the legitimacy and fairness of the electoral process.

“We urge ANSIEC to uphold the constitution and conduct elections in a transparent and lawful manner. Election is a constitutional matter that cannot be handled fraudulently. Any attempt to do so may lead to litigation, resulting in a waste of taxpayers’ money.

“We demand that ANSIEC does the right thing and ensures a free, fair, and credible election”, it concludes.
