Taraba state government has expressed concern over gradual decline in ethical conduct in among civil servants.
Gov. Agbu Kefas who stated this at the opening session of a five day professional development workshop for directors in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA’s) in Jalingo on Monday said civil service may go into irrelevance if urgent measure was not taken to reverse the system back on track.
The Gov. who was represented at the event by chief of staff government house Dr. Jeji Williams (mni) said the aim of the workshop was to acquaint senior civil servants on the implication of the current trend with a view to checkmating it during the period under review.
Decrying the civil service sorrow-stage as alarming, the governor charged participants to pay attention to the professional workshop which he described as timely and compulsory for directors in the state civil service to avoid repeats of the past.
Kefas who identified major setback in the civil service to “sentiment” warned that until this is over remarkable improvement will be difficult to be achieved and call on participants to deviate from old practices and embrace new change of approach, while maintaining that service delivery in both public and government offices have come to stay and commended the Head of Service for proactive.
Earlier in a welcome address, the state Head of Service (HOS) Mr. Paul Maigida Tino recalled on assumption of office in May 2023, Governor Agbu Kefas made it categorically clear that patriotic zeal to instill discipline and enhance capacity building of state civil servants for effective and efficient service delivery was not going to be negotiated.
According to him, directors are very critical in achieving set objectives particularly in the area to formulate and implement policies and programs of government through which dividends of democracy are delivered to electorates.
While urging participants to demonstrate a strong commitment to actualize government initiative, the head of civil service called for efficient, productive and incorruptible culture in the civil service as the training workshop will expose each and sundry to rudiment of administration and implementation of government policies and appreciated the state government’s quick intervention for approving the workshop.
Meanwhile, speaking to newsmen shortly after declaring open the workshop, the head of resource person, Prof. Friday Francis, said top agenda on the training will be focused on ethics conducts, communication, and service delivery and assured that participants will be equipped with new techniques at the end of the training.
