Reps broker peace among rival safety professionals

By Mercy Aikoye

The House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards has successfully brokered peace between three rival factions of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON). This milestone was achieved after the committee, led by Chairman Suleiman Gumi, gave each faction equal opportunities to address their concerns and reach resolutions.

According to Mr. Gumi, the reconciliation was crucial for the safety of Nigerians. The committee’s efforts resulted in the formation of a Caretaker Committee (CTC) to organize a conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) for ISPON. This will pave the way for the election of new executives to govern ISPON as a unified body.

The unity conference is scheduled to take place from October 17th to 19th, 2024, in Abuja. Mr. Gumi emphasized that all national leaders endorsed the communiqué in a positive and celebratory atmosphere, marking a fresh start for ISPON.

Past President of ISPON, Mr. Shaw Fregene, attributed the crisis to selfish interests. He noted that disagreements arose in 2016 due to leadership issues and the failure to follow the ISPON Act.

Mr. Fregene stressed that leadership tenure expiration is crucial, stating, “After two years, you go for re-election. After that, your tenure expires. So how can somebody stay on a position for four years without quitting six years?”

Former Secretary of ISPON, Mr. Iyenoma Osazee, highlighted the benefits of being an ISPON member. He lamented the crisis led to the emergence of foreign bodies and unprofessionalism.

Mr. Osazee emphasized the importance of regulation, citing South Africa’s requirement for foreign qualifications to be certified by their authorities before practice.

The committee urged health and environmental practitioners to obtain new ISPON certifications to continue practicing in Nigeria. After October 19th, only certifications issued by the new executives will be recognized.

A revalidation exercise is planned, and new certificates will be issued. Stakeholders are urged to cooperate with the process and support ISPON’s unity.

The Institute also called for sponsorship of their forthcoming conference, marking a significant step towards unity and promoting safety standards in Nigeria.
