Interior Ministry moves to boost skills of its staff

The Ministry of Interior has kicked off a Performance Management Workshop to boost the skills of its staff and agencies. The workshop, themed “United Front for a Secure Nation and Future,” aims to enhance efficiency and accountability within the civil service, according to a press statement from the Director Press and Public Relations Department, Ozoya Imohimi Tuesday.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Civil Service Strategic Implementation Plan (FCSSIP ‪2021-2025‬) and is part of the Federal Government’s (FG’s) efforts to introduce the Performance Management System (PMS) across all ministries, departments, and agencies.

The Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, highlighted the workshop’s significance in her opening address, emphasizing its role in strengthening the capacity of key personnel and providing a structured roadmap for cascading PMS ¹. This move is not surprising, given the Ministry’s commitment to reform and service improvement.

Key objectives of the workshop is to
strengthening capacity, by enhancing the skills of key personnel, enhance efficiency and accountability, by improving overall efficiency and accountability within the civil service.

The Ministry has been proactive in promoting staff welfare and performance. For instance, the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, received a merit award for outstanding performance and staff welfare ². The Ministry has also replaced the Annual Performance Evaluation System (APER) with the new Performance Management System (PMS) to enhance staff valuation and promotion.

The Department of Reform Coordination and Service Improvement plays a crucial role in driving service improvement initiatives within the Ministry ³. Its key functions include identifying service gaps, managing SERVICOM initiatives, and developing interventions to eliminate gaps.
