Matawalle briefs Tinubu on Northwest security progress

The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, on Tuesday, held a strategic meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, providing an update on the security situation in the Northwest and other regions of Nigeria.

The discussion focused on ongoing efforts to tackle insurgency, banditry, and other security threats that have plagued the nation.

Commending Matawalle’s leadership in the defence sector, President Tinubu praised the Nigerian security forces for their dedication. “Your exemplary leadership has been pivotal in advancing our national security goals,” Tinubu said, acknowledging the minister’s contributions since his appointment.

The president also expressed gratitude for the military’s relentless efforts in restoring peace to conflict-ridden areas. He stressed the importance of sustained vigilance in combating insurgency and pledged unwavering support for the armed forces.

“The sacrifices of our security forces are invaluable, and we are committed to providing them with the necessary resources to ensure they succeed in their mission of protecting Nigeria,” Tinubu stated.

Dr. Matawalle outlined the progress achieved by security forces, particularly in the Northwest, which has been grappling with a decade of insurgency driven by extremist groups. He noted that recent military operations had significantly weakened the operational capabilities of these groups.

“We have made significant strides, but the work is far from over. Our forces remain fully committed to restoring peace and normalcy to all affected regions,” the minister said.

Matawalle emphasized the importance of collaboration between security agencies and local communities in sustaining the fight against insurgency. He assured the president that plans were underway to strengthen security operations across other vulnerable areas, including the Northeast.

In response, President Tinubu called for a comprehensive approach to security challenges, urging enhanced cooperation among government institutions, security forces, and regional leaders to achieve lasting peace.

The meeting concluded with both leaders expressing optimism about the ongoing efforts. Matawalle acknowledged President Tinubu’s continuous support, saying it had been instrumental in recent military successes against insurgents and bandits.

The Nigerian government has stepped up efforts to restore security nationwide, particularly in the Northeast, where insurgency has displaced millions and devastated communities. Recent military offensives have targeted terrorist hideouts, while the government is also pursuing dialogue and reintegration initiatives.

“Our top priority remains the safety of our citizens, and we will do everything within our power to ensure that every Nigerian can live in peace and security,” Matawalle concluded.
