The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has reassured Nigerians that its scheme is inclusive and not discriminatory, ensuring every Nigerian, regardless of location or background, has access to education. Managing Director/CEO Akintunde Sawyerr made this statement during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships and Higher Education Financing.
Sawyerr highlighted NELFUND’s proactive efforts in engaging communities that feel left behind, particularly in the South East. Multiple sensitization rounds have resulted in a significant surge in applications. To date, the Fund has received over 350,000 applications and disbursed N10 billion, with a commitment to disbursing N90 billion in tuition fees and stipends.
Applications are pouring in at an average of 1,000 per day, with special provisions for students living with disabilities. NELFUND also aims to address barriers to girl-child education, recognizing the incredible leadership potential of Nigerian girls.
Sawyerr emphasized that NELFUND is designed to support the common man, especially during challenging economic times, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This initiative is not just a short-term palliative but a long-term solution for stability and growth in Nigeria.
The student loan initiative has been compared to monumental policies like Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s free education program and General Yakubu Gowon’s establishment of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). These policies have shaped Nigeria’s development, and the student loan initiative is equally progressive.
NELFUND is committed to working closely with the National Assembly to ensure no student is left behind. A comprehensive work plan will guide their efforts, and an upcoming retreat will facilitate collaboration and understanding of the National Assembly’s workings.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon Gboyega Isiaka, acknowledged NELFUND’s critical role in creating a future where Nigerian youth can realize their potential and contribute to national growth. The Committee is concerned about NELFUND’s management and potential.
Isiaka emphasized the Committee’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency. They will work within the law to meet the aspirations and expectations of Nigerians, particularly the youth.
The collaboration between NELFUND and the Committee aims to shape a student loan system serving all Nigerians. By ensuring accessible and equitable education, Nigeria can secure its future and build a stronger, more prosperous nation.
