Reps demand data on IDPs from commission

By Mercy Aikoye

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has urged the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and IDPs to provide a comprehensive report on internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria and neighboring countries. This call to action was made during a courtesy visit from Federal Commissioner Ahmed Tijani Ahmed in Abuja.

Kalu attributed the displacements to natural disasters like flooding and erosion, primarily caused by climate change. He emphasized the need for data on the total national NEEDS analysis on IDPs, as some Nigerians displaced across borders are eager to resettle.

The Deputy Speaker noted the severe effects of erosion in Abia, Anambra, Enugu, and other South Eastern states, highlighting the urgent attention required from the federal government to address ecological challenges.

During the meeting, Kalu stressed that legislative interventions are necessary to support IDPs. He also questioned the Commission’s preparedness, considering its budget of N1.6 billion, and requested a detailed report on the plight of Nigerians affected by climate change.

Ahmed Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner, expressed gratitude and pledged to submit the report within two weeks. He also appealed for increased funding for the Commission.

The report will guide budget decisions and be shared with the Budget Office of the federation. Kalu emphasized the importance of understanding the Commission’s mandate, particularly for Nigerians displaced across borders who wish to return home.

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and IDPs is expected to provide the report, shedding light on the IDP situation and informing legislative actions to support those affected by natural disasters and climate change. ‎
