The remains of Chief Walter Ukaegbu, a veteran journalist, were interred over the weekend in his hometown of Amokwe Item, located in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
Ukaegbu, who passed away on August 29, 2024, in Abuja after battling a prolonged illness, was aged 67.
The late journalist, a former staff of The Sun Publishing Limited, was known for his extensive coverage of business-related matters, particularly at the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and its affiliated agencies.
Delivering a sermon during the funeral service at Wesley Methodist Church, Amaokwe Circuit, Rt. Reverend Udo Nmeregini emphasized the inevitability of death and urged Christians to lead righteous lives in preparation for eternity.
Drawing from John 14:1–6, the cleric highlighted the importance of accepting Jesus Christ as “the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” He also encouraged Ukaegbu’s family, friends, and colleagues to find solace in the exemplary life he lived, characterized by honesty, transparency, and truthfulness.
In a condolence letter on behalf of The Sun Publishing Limited, Jessica Oje-Humphrey, the company’s Human Resources Manager, described Ukaegbu as a dedicated professional who made significant contributions to the growth of the organization.
“In his career as a journalist, Ukaegbu exhibited diligence and professionalism,” Oje-Humphrey wrote. “He started as a maritime reporter and became a recognized authority in the field, shaping opinions and influencing policies through his incisive reporting. Additionally, he excelled as a newspaper production expert.”
Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also expressed shock at Ukaegbu’s passing. In her condolence message, she described the loss as “painful and devastating” while extending her sympathies to his wife, Dr. Ifeyinwa Nnamchi-Ukaegbu, and praying for God to grant the family comfort and strength.
Chief Walter Ukaegbu is survived by his wife, Dr. Ifeyinwa Nnamchi-Ukaegbu; his son, Jesse Chidubem Ukaegbu; his daughter, Favour Amarachukwu Ukaegbu; and numerous other relatives.
