Rep tackle IOCs over effects on oil producing communities

A nember of the House of representatives Adhoc Committee on Gas Flaring in Nigeria has expressed disappointment over the lacadecical attitude of International Oil Companies (IOCs) in addressing the lingering issue and effects of gas flaring in host communities in Nigeria.

The member, Hon.Tolulope Sadipe (Oyo State), became emotional after citing some states where mothers and children have been affected by the indiscriminate gas Flaring by thr IOCs and the unwillingness of these companies to adopt international best practices in addressing the hazard in the affected communities.

In his response the Edeimu-Chuwumah, Adviser, Gas Strategy Policy and Regulations (Commercial), Chevron Nigeria Limited, Princess Edeimu-Chukwumah, and his colleague, Sam Dabo, said that Chevron places value on lives of Nigerians emphasizing that flaring by the company had been reduced to three percent and they are aiming at zero percent flaring in 2024.
The Chairman of the Adhoc Committee, Hon. Ahmed Munir, urged the IOCs to provide relevant documents to aid the committee in it’s Investigation to find lasting solution to the lingering flairing of gas.
Present at the hearing were EXXON Mobile, National Oli Spill Detection and Response Agency NODRA, Chevron, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission NUPRC, a regulatory body amongst others.
