Education key to Africa’s development, says Onuakalusi at UNN Founders Day

The member representing Oshodi/Isolo II Federal Constituency of Lagos State,
Hon. Barr. Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, has underscored the transformative power of education in driving socio-political development across Africa.

Speaking at the 64th Founders Day anniversary of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he serves as Chairman of the National Organising Committee, Onuakalusi emphasized the institution’s critical role in shaping leaders and fostering progress.

“As a proud alumnus of this great institution, I am reminded of its rich history and immense contributions to our society,” Onuakalusi stated in his welcome address. “Education is the cornerstone of development, and access to quality education is essential for empowering individuals, communities, and nations,” he said.

The Founders Day celebration, themed Sustainable Education and Its Role in the 21st Century, highlighted the role of tertiary education in Africa’s socio-political and economic advancement. Onuakalusi noted that this theme aligns with his legislative priorities, calling for collaborative efforts to make education a catalyst for change.

“This theme resonates deeply with me. As a legislator, I have championed policies that prioritize education as a vehicle for sustainable development,” he said.

The event also featured a keynote address by Justice David Kenani, former Chief Justice of Kenya, who discussed strategies to bridge educational gaps and leverage knowledge for continental progress.

Onuakalusi urged participants to reflect on UNN’s enduring legacy while contributing to conversations on how education can drive innovation and societal growth.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, celebrated for its trailblazing role in African education since 1960, continues to be a beacon of excellence. With this year’s Founders Day, it reaffirms its commitment to advancing knowledge and empowering future generations for the betterment of the continent.
